Gemini App for iPhone Update: Model Picker and New Features

Following last week’s announcement, the latest update for the Gemini app on iPhone introduces a new model picker at the top of the screen, giving users more control over the functionality and performance of their virtual assistant. The updated version allows users to choose from three distinct models:

• 1.5 Flash: Best for everyday assistance
• 2.0 Flash Experimental: Access a preview of the latest experimental model

Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental: Performance and Limitations

The new Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental model, which may not function as expected in some cases, offers significant performance improvements over the previous 1.5 Pro model. While it is currently unavailable for file uploads, Gemini 2.0 Flash boasts double the speed and outperforms 1.5 Pro in key benchmarks. According to Google, this new model will deliver an “even more helpful Gemini assistant,” with general availability expected in January 2024.

Additionally, the agentic Deep Research feature, which debuted on desktop and mobile web platforms, is expected to be rolled out in early 2025.

Gemini 2.0 Experimental Advanced for Subscribers

Gemini subscribers can now access the 2.0 Experimental Advanced model, which offers significantly improved performance compared to previous versions.

New Extensions in Gemini iPhone App

Alongside the model picker, the update to version 1.2024.4970016 of the Gemini app introduces two useful extensions:

• Google Home Extension: Control your smart home devices directly from Gemini.
• Google Photos Extension: Access and analyze your photos directly through Gemini.

Note that users may need to join the Google Home Public Preview program to use the first extension. As of now, the Google Photos extension is not yet available, although users can upload images for analysis.

Additional Features and Updates

In addition to the model picker and extensions, the update includes the following features:

• Saved Info: Access your saved information through gemini.google.com/saved-info in the account menu.
• Conversation Starters: Non-Gemini Advanced users will now see a row of conversation starters above the text field.
